Post subject:  AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

hi
installed the robot CD's drivers on my Win7/intel64bits , failed : connection says FT232R usb Uart driver not found.
try to upgrade or install it manualy : fail.

i dropped the last FTDI drivers here http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM ... tified.zip

uninstalled the old one, reboot, .., install the last one : check ! installation seems ok.

but when i connect the bot : fail , same msg in the peripheral manager : FT232R USB UART driver not found...

help me please ..thx

Hello,

this may be a similar issue to:
viewtopic.php?p=9857#p9857

please check in the device/hardware manager if the PID is 0 ?

Best Regards,
SlyD

Post subject:  Re: AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

yes SlyD, thanks
it seems to be the same pb because my FT232 usb usart driver detailed hardware id shows 2 entries :
USB\VID_0403&PID_0000&REV_0600
USB\VID_0403&PID_0000

So i dropped the FTprog exe but when i scan & parse it always says (usb connected to robot or not)

"No device found, if there is a FTDI devices connected, it may be still enumerated, try again in few moment"

reinstalled the driver, reboot,... still fail... argh !

thx for next tip ;-)

Can you please go into Device Manager, and confirm that you have "USB Serial" under USB Controllers and "USB Serial" under Ports (COM & LPT)?

Make sure they're the same version.

No usb serial entry in usb controlers , nor in COM & lpt (wich doesn't exists)

I uninstalled all (with the FTClean.exe) reboot and reinstalled the lasts D2xx & VCP drivers.

Still not working and no usb serial in usb controlers...
I reinstalled the standards arduino drivers.
no change.

It seems the chip used isn't a real FTDI chip:

Post subject:  Re: AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

Hello,

we are aware of this and investigate this already since thursday as I also mentioned in the other thread.

We use FTDI chips since >7 years now and never had such a problem.
(and until about 2 years ago, there were no such counterfeit FTDI chips as far as I know)
Lots of companies are affected by this issue, and most of them purchased these chips thinking that they
were original FTDI.

This chip looks almost exactly like the original and also behaves like the original, so it is very hard to detect such counterfeits (even FTDI uses a very dirty hack to set the PID to 0).
Usually counterfeits/fake chips are easy to detect, as they simply don't work as expected (empty or different chips with wrong label) or look very different. This one is a high quality one...

The supply chain in china can be complex. We are currently investigating how this happened and which batches are affected. As far as we know so far, it only affects the most recent shipments.

The 2.12 and 2.11 drivers that deliberately erase the PID have been removed from Windows Update recently (as this was a very bad idea of FTDI, it mostly affects the users and not the people that produce the counterfeit chips), so it should not happen automatically anymore. The counterfeit chips can work fine with the older FTDI drivers and Linux of course!
The PID can also be set back to normal with FT Prog. You may have to create an .inf file with PID set to 0000 first and then install this, change the PID and then install the normal driver.

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by this.

SlyD

thanks for your honest reply.

i'll try to explain that to my son , very impatient to play with AAR04 arduino programming !

As soon as you find a solution, please post it on that thread.

Post subject:  Re: AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

As I said, in the meantime you can still use this USB Interface.
You just have to set the PID back to normal with FT Prog and use an older FTDI driver Version like 2.08 or 2.10.

Post subject:  Re: AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

As i said 3 posts later : with 2.12 driver , FTprog can't detect any Device when scanning, wether i connect the robot or not. And i still don't have any USB device in USB controler tab of peripheral manager, as you asked me to verify.

As you said, i've just try with former Ftdi drivers 2.10 and 2.08 ... no more usb device, no more Ftprog port detection.
i installed its after uninstalling the past driver with the ftdi uninstall.exe tool , or not. no change in results.

Please note that when in install the 2.12, 2.08 or 2.10 driver, i use the provided "CDM_v2.(08|10|12) WHQL Certified.exe" , and the wizard finishing install message is :
"The drivers were successfully installed on this computer" and status is "ready to use" to VCP & D2XX drivers.

so ... still regret to disturb you asking a real solution.

Post subject:  Re: AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

Hello,

first, the .exe does not help, this does NOT actually install the driver, the install itself happens when you first plug in the USB Interface.
It does NOT change the driver afterwards.

So you MUST use the windows device manager and manually point to the right driver.

Please try these:
http://www.arexx.com/downloads/CDMv2.10.00__PID_FIX.zip

In the device manager, please DEINSTALL the FTDI drivers, both entries! So two entries, one in Comports and one in USB.
(check "deinstall driver software for this device")
Please also go to windows control panel --> add/remove programs and look for FTDI, deinstall all FTDI Drivers there.
(should be called something like "Windows Drivers FTDI .... " or so)

Then UNPLUG the USB Interface.
Now plug it back in and SKIP any automatic windows update installation!
Point Windows to the extracted driver package I linked above.
If you could not skip the automatic install... no problem do it manually in the device manager.
Update driver software, search on computer, click on the green arrow: LIST of drivers, search on drive, point to the driver, accept the warning message and continue.
(for the USB entry select ftdibus.inf and for the comport select ftdiport.inf)

This should work for devices that have been set to PID = 0.
Then you can use FT Prog utility to set the PID back to 6001 if you want, or just leave it as is... you always have to install these drivers when you plug it into other USB ports! May happen that windows scans for win update drivers again when you plug it in a different usb port.

Please let me know if this worked for you.

Best Regards,
SlyD

PS:
I am using german language on the PC, so the names of the entries may be different for you, but I hope you understand what I mean.

Post subject:  Re: AAR-04 : FTDI drivers fail to install win7/64bits

Hi
I proceed exactly as described in your last post SlyD and .... miracle ...it works !
i can now connect the com port, load and test few self test and .ino codes on arduino, perfect!
i can also confirm that FTprog port scan is working now, but product ID value still be 0000.
Sure that the driver pid fix you just provide is the key of succes.
In all my past installation tests, i never uninstalled things in windows add/remove programs, as you mention now.
Perhaps it helps too.

So, now my son is very impatient to play with this nice programmation tool !

I thank you very much SlyD for your help & investigations.

best regards
RCS

OK! Same problem here. Just bought an AAR-4 @ Conrad.nl. Appears to have the same fake FTDI chip. Finally found solution here. Thanks!

Hello,

well then just try the newer ones from the Internet, not the old ones from the CD.
Everything is already explained in this forum.
